Today's Tangle - Paradise Flower

Here is another "Paradise Flower" tile in more subdued colors and on kraft paper this time. I embellished the design with black orbs and added some metallic copper accents.

"Paradise Flower" is by Art Cat 86 and the pattern is posted HERE on Flickr.

Today's Tangle - Paradise Flower

"Paradise Flower" is by Art Cat 86 and I found the pattern HERE on her Flickr page. I thought this might be difficult to draw but it was quite easy when following her step-out.

Today's Tangle - Khala

"Khala" is a pattern by Anica Gabrovec CZT (aka Zen Linea). Her pattern step-out is posted HERE on Instagram. Anica also has a YouTube tutorial where she shows a slightly different way of drawing "Khala" and you can watch it HERE. It's also possible to draw this design in other shapes but I haven't attempted that yet so I'm not sure how it's done.

I found this pattern very challenging to draw and I had no luck following the step-out. However, I found it a bit easier when I followed the steps in the video. That's due to one step near the beginning that is missing from the step-out.

Although I did successfully draw today's tile, I did have to do a lot of sketching in pencil first to get the elements positioned properly and at the right sizes. I started with a triangle template that I cut from card stock and traced on my tile in pencil. Next, I added the crossing guidelines that Anica shows in the step-out and in the video tutorial. Then I lightly penciled in two triangular auras just inside the outline of the triangle in the thickness that I thought I wanted and rounded the corners a bit. After that I penciled in the center orb and the scallops that radiate from it as shown in the video (this is what is missing from the step-out). The scallops helped me see where to sketch six circles where the six loops would go. By sketching all of this in pencil, I was able to make adjustments as I went along. Although this was very helpful, and I'm quite pleased with the results, it was still a challenge to get everything the right shapes and sizes.

Today's Tangle - Whipdcreem

This tangle is so enjoyable to draw that I had to do another tile. This time I used a tan tile, a black 01 Micron pen and a brown 01 Micron pen. The shading was done with a terracotta colored pencil and I used a white charcoal pencil for the highlights.

"Whipdcreem" is by Doris Bisschop CZT and you'll find her step-out HERE at Musterquelle.

Today's Tangle - Whipdcreem

"Whipdcreem" is by Doris Bisschop CZT and you'll find her step-out HERE at Musterquelle. This pattern is very similar to a pattern called "Noodle" which is by Angie Gittles CZT. I blogged about "Noodle" HERE.

I see two main differences between "Whipdcreem" and "Noodle". "Noodle" has black spaces where the elements meet the orbs down the center. The "Noodle" elements each span three orbs and they are staggered on the right and left sides. With "Whipdcreem", the elements are back-to-back on the right and left sides and they only span two orbs. I find it easier to create curves and turn corners with "Whipdcreem" than with "Noodle".

Classic Zentangle® - Tripoli Monotangle

I drew this tile for a prompt in the Today's Tangles: Keeping it Classic Facebook group. The prompt was to draw a monotangle using one of the tangles featured in the Project Pack No. 07: 12 Days of Zentangle - Day 04 video which you can watch HERE. I chose to use "Tripoli" which you can read more about HERE.

Today's Tangle - Ypsmi

I decided to draw another "Ypsmi" tile but didn't realize how tiny I was drawing the design until after I had my guidelines drawn and drew the first few "Y" shapes. I thought about starting over but went ahead and finished it. I think it looks kind of cute this small. This is a 3 1/2 x 3 1/2 inch tile, by the way.

"Ypsmi" is by Hanny Nura and her step-out is posted HERE on Instagram.

Today's Tangle - Z'ele

"Z'ele" is by Jane Dickinson CZT and her step-out is posted HERE on her blog. I thoroughly enjoyed drawing my first tile below but I struggled with how to embellish it. For the tile above, I started with a grid with 4 squares across and down instead of two which made it easier to draw the loops. I love the pretty design that resulted from drawing it smaller. I drew the grid in pencil and erased it later for a light, airy look. I decided that it didn't need any shading and Jane didn't use any on her example images either.

Classic Zentangle® - Mooka, Shattuck & Therefore

I drew this tile for a prompt in the Today's Tangles: Keeping it Classic Facebook group.

These are the tangles that I used:

Mooka - I blogged about "Mooka" HERE.

Shattuck - I blogged about "Shattuck" HERE.

Therefore - There is no published step-out or much information about "Therefore". It is simply three dots or orbs drawn in a triangle formation. Maria Thomas mentions "Therefore" in THIS Zentangle newsletter article about the tangle called "Well Well Who". You can right-click on Maria's Zendala tile and choose "View Image" to see it larger or click HERE.

One Little Word Video Lesson

This is the third tile that I drew by following THIS Tangledyogi 333 video class by Romi Marks on YouTube. This one is my favorite of the three.

One Little Word Video Lesson

I drew these two tiles by following THIS Tangledyogi 333 video class by Romi Marks on YouTube. As the title of the video suggests, Romi draws a word in the center of each of her tiles. I decided that I didn't want to do that so instead I drew the swirls that you see on today's tiles. If you haven't tried any of Romi's video lessons, I highly recommend them because they are a lot of fun.

I drew the tile above first as I watched the video the first time. It's a little rough but I'm pleased with it. I drew the tile below next but didn't quite get the shape of the design right so I'm not very happy with it. I drew one more tile in another colorway that I will show you tomorrow.

Today's Tangle - Fenglish

"Fenglish" is by Jessica Davies CZT and the pattern is HERE at TanglePatterns. I started out by drawing a single row of the pattern then wanted to come up with a way to fill my whole tile with the design. So, after drawing the first row, I flipped my tile over and repeated the same thing upside down and connected it to the first row. This created an interesting woven effect that I kind of like even though it no longer looks all that much like the step-out this way. I repeated the same thing two more times to complete my tile.

"Eyehook" is by Debbie Perdue CZT and her step-out is HERE at TanglePatterns. I embellished my tile with graphite auras and dots of metallic silver gel pen.

Moroccan Wishing Star Video Lesson

I drew this tile by following THIS Tangledyogi 333 video class on YouTube by Romi Marks. Read yesterday's post for more information and a link to a star template. I drew this one on the same thick watercolor paper that I use for drawing classic Zentangle tiles. I didn't realize until later that I pressed a little too hard with my pencil while tracing the star template onto my tile. This left a star-shaped impression all the way around that I wasn't able to fill in with the colored pencils. I will have to remember to draw more lightly next time I trace a template.

Below is the same star drawing which I cut out digitally, placed on a digital background image and added a digital drop shadow.

Moroccan Wishing Star Video Lesson

I drew this tile by following THIS Tangledyogi 333 video class on YouTube by Romi Marks. I don't enjoy drawing on large tiles (Romi uses a 6-inch star template) so I drew mine on a 3 1/2 x 3 1/2 inch tile. I started by downloading and printing the 2" and 3" star template that's found on THIS site. I glued one of the 3-inch stars to heavy card stock and cut it out. I traced the outer edge of the star on my tile in pencil. I thought it was a little too small so I added as much of a pencil aura as I could fit on the tile then went over the outer pencil line with my black pen before proceeding with the tutorial. Because I drew mine so small, I skipped the cutting and folding steps.

I drew this star while following along with the video so it's a sort of rough draft on not-so-great card stock. I will show you another star tomorrow that I drew more carefully. Below you can see today's star which has been cut out digitally, placed on a floral background image and a digital drop shadow added.
