Official Zentangle® Pattern - Ravel

I have blogged about this tangle called "Ravel" a couple of times HERE and HERE. However, my examples were based on examples that I had seen on Pinterest and not from an official step-out. That's because there was no step-out published, not even for CZTs, until very recently. Earlier this month, Zentangle HQ finally published the step-out in their newsletter and you can see it HERE.

Melinda Barlow CZT has a YouTube video about "Ravel" HERE and The Tireless Tangler has one HERE.

Today's Tangle - 4C Art-Deco

"4C Art-Deco" is by Sylvia Heijenrath and her pattern is posted HERE at Pattern-Collections.com. I'm so glad that I tried this pattern because I love the look of it. The step-out shows some other variations that I hope to try sometime but I think that this version will be my favorite.

Today's Tangle - X'd

"X'd" is by Ina Sonnenmoser and her pattern is found HERE at Pattern-Collections.com. What isn't posted there is the original image that inspired Ina which I saw in her Facebook group. It didn't look too difficult to break it down once I realized that a grid with more squares would do the trick. I drew each straight section and each curved section in separate squares of the grid. I drew all of the straight sections first then connected the open ends with the curved sections last. I think it has a retro mod look that's kind of fun.

Today's Tangles - Tawa & Arroy Ribbon

"Tawa" is by Miranda Gerber CZT and I found the pattern HERE at Musterquelle. Only after I'd finished drawing this tile did I realize that it looks very much like hair.

Rather than feature "Arroy Ribbon" in a separate post, I'm blogging about it today. Although I like the pretty shape of it, I'm not really sure how to use it in a composition with other tangles. The pattern is by Cécile Graat and her step-out is HERE at Pattern-Collections.com.

Today's Tangle - Snag

"Snag" is a pattern by Jem Miller and her step-out is posted HERE on her blog and also HERE at TanglePatterns.com. I drew mine in a square grid as directed but decided to erase the grid when I was finished. Rather than do any shading, I drew a double graphite aura inside and out.

I guess that I'm a little slow but I couldn't make out at first how Jem's second version of "Snag" was related to the first version on the step-out. After typing this post I was looking at some of her example images and it finally dawned on me that the technique is the same for both even though the results look very different. Earlier I had tried and given up drawing the alternate version even though I really like the look of it. That's because I was trying to draw the shape all in one go and it always came out a horrible mess. I know now that isn't the way to draw it. Instead you draw each of the loop shapes individually so that their bases touch each other in the centers and in the corners.

Below is a tile featuring the alternate version of "Snag":

Today's Tangle - Sakuru Flower

"Sakuru Flower" is by Ina Sonnenmoser and her pattern is found HERE at Pattern-Collections.com. I don't have a lot of experience yet drawing mandala designs so I drew this one very simply just to try out the pattern. I styled mine after one of the variations on Ina's step-out and added some metallic silver accents.

Today's Tangle - Curly Square

"Curly Square" is by Lisa Jane and her step-out is posted HERE at Pattern-Collections.com. I drew mine more like the ones in the example image on the pattern. I think they have a pleasing funky look when drawn that way. I also ended up doing something slightly different than suggested in step 2 of the pattern. I had some trouble guessing how far to extend the stems of the Fescu-like shapes so I drew them flush with the corners of the squares. I found it was easier to extend them later when I completed the corners in step 4.

Today's Tangle - Flair

This version of "Flair" is by Chris Titus and there is no step-out that I am aware of at this time. Chris has a vintage Flair kitchen stove and the glass oven doors have this design on them. She posted her interpretation of the design in one of the Facebook groups that I belong to and she wasn't sure at the time if she would make a step-out because it is similar to another pattern. The gist of it is to draw a square grid. Inside each square of the grid, draw fat seed shapes that span from corner to corner and overlap each other.

There is another pattern called "Flair" that is by Deb Myers CZT and I blogged about it HERE.

Today's Tangle - Blaw

"Blaw" is by Jem Miller and the step-out is posted HERE on her blog. The space behind the design on my tile looked rather plain so I filled the whole thing with auras.

I drew this tile for a prompt in the Today's Tangles: Keeping it Classic Facebook group. The prompt was to use Crazy Huggins as the string.

These are the tangles that I used:

Crazy Huggins - I blogged about Crazy Huggins HERE.

Florz - I blogged about "Florz" HERE.

Hurry - I blogged about "Hurry" HERE.

Knightsbridge - I blogged about "Knightsbridge" HERE.

Today's Tangle - Lisette

"Lisette" is by Rosemary Turpin and you can find her pattern HERE at TanglePatterns.com. I decided to draw mine in a pencil grid which I later erased. The result is what appears to be a continuous loopy line. I also added some metallic gold accents dots and finished off the ends with tiny black dots. I enjoyed drawing this tangle very much and will keep it in mind if I need something for filling a background.

Today's Tangle - Coffeebean Flower

The step-out for "Coffeebean Flower" was created by Ina Sonnenmoser who was inspired by a drawing by Irina Wins. The pattern is posted HERE at Pattern-Collections.com.

UPDATE: The Pattern-Collections website has shut down. Click HERE to view this pattern.

I drew them around the inside of a square pencil border then connected the bottom of each pair.

Today's Tangle - Gemiko

After drawing the tile that I showed you yesterday featuring "Gemiko" (Gem by Emiko) I had to draw another one. This time I used a lighter color tile and different metallic colored pencils. Read yesterday's post HERE for more information about this design and where to find the step-out.

Today's Tangle - Gemiko

I saw a step-out by Terri Delaune for drawing designs like this one in a private Facebook group. She was inspired by a beautiful drawing by Emiko Kaneko which Terri calls "Gemiko" (Gem by Emiko). You can see the inspiration design HERE on Emiko's Instagram. I haven't learned to draw gem stones so I skipped that part and just focused on embellishing the rest of the design.

If you join the "Anything Goes - Tangled Art For Everyone" Facebook group you can see the step-out HERE. I also saw the step-out on the Zentangle Mosaic app. Do a search for #gemiko and it will come up in the app.

"Lauren" is by Kathy Barringer CZT and you'll find her step-out HERE on her blog. I have added some embellishments and shading to my tile.

Classic Zentangle® - Bales, Cubine, Florz, Huggins & Knightsbridge

I drew this tile for a prompt in the Today's Tangles: Keeping it Classic Facebook group. The prompt was to draw a large orb that fills the inside of the border then divide the inside of the orb with a "Z". After that I divided the whole space inside the border with a diagonal grid then drew all of the tangles inside the grid.

These are the tangles that I used:

Bales - I blogged about "Bales" HERE.

Cubine - I blogged about "Cubine" HERE.

Florz - I blogged about "Florz" HERE.

Huggins - I blogged about "Huggins" HERE.

Knightsbridge - I blogged about "Knightsbridge" HERE.

Today's Tangle - Mathura

You might recognize "Mathura" by Anne Marks from the "Southwest Mathura" tiles that I blogged about HERE. Those tiles feature "Mathura" as a single element in the center of a composition. As you can see, this tangle works very well as a ribbon or border too as it is shown on her step-out. You'll find the pattern HERE on her blog. I didn't add any shading to my drawing because I really like the clean look of it and the metallic silver gel ink around the flower petals looks a bit like shading.

Today's Tangle - Lovely Loops

"Lovely Loops" is by Kathy Barringer and the step-out is posted HERE on her blog about halfway down the page. This appears to be a variation of her tangle called "Spoon Flwrs" which I blogged about HERE. Believe it or not, the entire thing is drawn in a single stroke consisting of bulb shapes and auras. I started with a square pencil border to help keep my pen from going completely wild.

Today's Tangle - Trellis

"Trellis" is by Alice Hendon CZT and you'll find her pattern HERE on her blog. I did one thing differently to make the pattern easier for me to draw. Instead of each motif filling one square of the grid, I divided each motif among four smaller squares. You can't tell that I did that because I drew my grid in pencil and erased it later. And, because I was working on such a dark colored tile, I decided to keep the background of the design completely open instead of filling any large areas with black ink. By alternating black petals with turquoise ones, there is enough contrast without making the tile look too somber. I think that the pop of white in the center of each black flower helps too.

Today's Tangle - Occir

"Occir" is by Lin Chiu CZT and I found her step-out HERE on her Facebook page. I embellished mine a little and added metallic gold auras.
