Favorite Tiles - Official Zentangle Patterns

Today's post features a few of my favorite tiles containing official Zentangle patterns.

The tangle above is "Huggins" and I blogged about it HERE.

The tile above also features "Huggins" in the style of "Delft Delights" by Marguerite Samama CZT. I blogged about this tile HERE.

I thought I had blogged about the tile above but it looks like I never did. It's also in the style of Delft Delights.

I blogged about "Hurry" HERE.

I blogged about this "Indy Rella" tile HERE.

You can read my original post about "Zinger" HERE.

Classic Zentangles - Paradox

The prompt for last week on the Today’s Tangles: Keeping it Classic Facebook group was to draw a square string divided into quarters and having a diamond shape in the center. We only had one tangle to use this time and that was the official Zentangle pattern, "Paradox". I submitted the tile above to the group first then later I drew the three tiles that you see below.

This is what the string looked like for the above tile:

My favorite version of "Paradox" is the fan-shaped design. I used it exclusively on the tile above and also on the tile below. The fans are in the same configuration on the tile below but I used a different drawing technique. I drew very lightly with my pen, just skimming the surface of the paper and allowing my hand to be slightly shaky. I also added "sparkles".

The tile below contains some fan-shaped and some of the twisted column version "Paradox" placed very randomly in the string.

I tweaked the string a little as you can see below.

The tile below was also drawn somewhat randomly with a differently tweaked string.

Below you can see the string that I used:

For information about "Paradox", read THIS post.

Today's Tangle - Well Love

"Well Love" is by YuRu Chen and you'll find her step-out HERE on her blog. This would be a pretty pattern to use on a Valentine tile because the flowers are made up of spiraling hearts.

UPDATE: Yu Ru Chen's blog appears to be gone. Click HERE to view this pattern.

I like "Well Love" so well that I drew another tile:

Six More Favorite Ribbon Tangles

I blogged about "O-Zee" HERE.

I think you can tell that I had a lot of fun drawing and coloring "RangoliLiner". I blogged about it HERE.

I didn't blog about "Skittles" all that long ago but it's a favorite. You can read about it HERE.

"Stonia" is such a pretty pattern and I blogged about it HERE.

You can read about "V-Snail" in THIS post.

"Y-Chain" is a simple yet cute tangle and I blogged about it HERE.

A Few Favorite Ribbon Tangles

I will occasionally post some of my favorite tangles and tiles, most of them from when the content of this blog was part of my other blog called "Linda's Crafty Inspirations". That blog is mainly about my beadwork projects and you can see it HERE. Last May I created this blog and it is devoted entirely to tangling. At that time I moved all of the tangling posts from the other blog over to this one. Since I copied them here in large batches, there's a good chance that you may not have seen those old posts. So today I'm posting a few of my favorite ribbon tangles along with links to my original posts that feature them. If you go to those posts, you'll find info about the patterns and where to find the step-outs.

"Buddeena" is the very first pattern that I created and I blogged about it HERE. In that post you'll find the link to my step-out at Pattern-Collections.com. Below is another one of my favorite "Buddeena" tiles.

I blogged about "Bugler" HERE.

This is my own take on "Floral Wave" which you can read about in THIS post.

"Lily Bridge" is such a pretty pattern and you can read my post about it HERE.

"Mehndi Daisy" is featured in THIS post. It's not really a ribbon-type pattern but I turned it into one by stringing them together.

Today's Tangles - Kettling & Sistar

I finally got around to trying this very popular pattern called "Sistar". It's fun to draw and embellish. It's by Hanny Nura and you'll find her step-out HERE at TanglePatterns.com. It's also posted HERE on Hanny's Instagram page. Tangle Dream has a YouTube video about this tangle HERE.

"Kettling" is by Ria Matheussen CZT and her pattern is found HERE at TanglePatterns.com. Melinda Barlow has a video about this tangle HERE. I also enjoyed drawing this pattern very much and I added some touches of color just for fun.

RATOON STEP-OUT RELEASED TO THE PUBLIC

Good news for those of you who have been waiting for a step-out for Ratoon. The step-out was posted in the Zentangle newsletter yesterday. You'll find it HERE.

Today's Tangle - Owline

This tangle by Jacki Rose CZT is called "Owline". The pattern is posted HERE at TanglePatterns.com. This is a lot of fun to draw and I love how you can just keep adding more and more spirals with little hats. I embellished mine with some weight in the corners and some dots at the ends of the hats.

Today's Tangle - A-Frame

This tangle is called "A-Frame". It's by Angie Gittles CZT and her step-out is posted HERE at TanglePatterns.com. Melinda Barlow CZT has a YouTube video about this pattern HERE. You probably can't tell, but the gold on the tile above was colored with a metallic gold Gelly Roll.

I find it very relaxing to draw lines in a grid so I drew one more tile with this tangle:

Today's Tangle - 1 2 3 O'Leary

This tangle called "1 2 3 O'Leary" is by Antonine Koval CZT and you'll find the step-out HERE at TanglePatterns.com. Melinda Barlow CZT has a video HERE. It took a little practice to get the hang of drawing this one but I think it came out kind of cute. The spiral bits remind me of cinnamon rolls.

I drew the ribbon on the left according to the step-out. I drew three rings in each section on the one on the right which is upside down. If you look closely, you'll see that I added a touch of blue where the base of the ribbon shows behind the rings and spirals.

Classic Zentangle® - W2 and Scena

The prompt for today's tile was to draw the official Zentangle pattern called "W2" for the string and fill the spaces of "W2" with other tangles chosen from the prompt's tangle list. I drew "W2" quite large and on the diagonal then I filled all of the segments with the official tangle called "Scena".

I have previously blogged about "W2" HERE and I blogged about "Scena" HERE.

Today's Tangle - Kommastrophe

"Kommastrophe" is by Melody Trotter and her pattern is HERE at Pattern-Collections.com. MimiXY has a video about this pattern HERE. I enjoyed drawing and coloring this pretty design. I used a white Gelly Roll pen to fill the background with spirals and dots.

Today's Tangles - Membranart & 'Nzeppel

This is "Membranart" by Tomàs Padrós along with "'Nzeppel" by Zentangle. I remember trying to draw "Membranart" some time ago but I couldn't get it to look right so I gave up on it. Now that I've had more drawing experience, I thought I would challenge myself to try it again the other night. Not only did I attempt to draw "Membranart" but I also filled the holes with "'Nzeppel". I'm not sure how successful I was at making it look as if the "'Nzeppel" is behind/below the Membranart. I sense a sort of optical illusion where it depends on the lighting and how I look at it whether the holes are sunk in or they are sitting on the surface like rocks.

You'll find the step-out for "Membranart" HERE at TanglePatterns.com and also HERE at Pattern-Collections.com. MimiXY has a YouTube video HERE. I have previously blogged about "'Nzeppel" HERE.

Today's Tangles - Bonnie, Msst & Beadlines

This tangle by Jennifer Jones CZT is called "Bonnie" and you'll find her step-out HERE at TanglePatterns.com. It was the Art Nouveau look of it that caught my eye and I love that there are lots of ways that this design can be embellished. I especially like how Melinda Barlow added orbs along the sides of them in her video that you can watch HERE.

Rather than draw my tile as a monotangle, I filled the background with "Msst" and some aura'd "Beadlines". I hadn't used "Msst" much before and I discovered while drawing this tile that it's easier to draw the squiggly lines horizontally rather than vertically.

"Msst" is an official Zentangle pattern and I blogged about it before HERE.

"Beadlines" is by Margaret Bremner CZT and there isn't actually a step-out for it, probably because it is simply lines with dots drawn along them. It is featured HERE on her blog and Linda Farmer writes about this tangle HERE at TanglePatterns.com. I found two videos about this pattern HERE and HERE.

I drew the tile below before I did the one at the top of this post. I wasn't happy with the way it looked after drawing all of those little dots so I came up with the idea of connecting them into short "Beadlines". I still think it looks kind of busy but it was good practice for drawing "Bonnie".

Today's Tangle - XLnt

This tangle is called "XLnt" and it's by Jody Genovese CZT. The step-out is posted HERE at TanglePatterns.com. This is kind of fun to draw once you get the hang of it. It's very good for practicing drawing circular auras. I don't find it easy to keep my auras evenly spaced when drawing around curves.

Today's Tangle - Ratoon

Believe it or not, this bit of craziness is "Ratoon" by Zentangle. This is what "Ratoon" might look like if it joined the circus! By the time I had finished adding as many embellishments as I could think of, I decided that I might as well fill the background with something equally crazy. It was actually very relaxing drawing all of those lines with a pencil. I started by drawing lines going from the "Ratoon" out to each corner and then again from each side and the top and bottom. After that I started filling in with lines in between each of the eight original lines and again in between the new lines until eventually I had no space left for any more lines. I should probably mention that I had already done the shading on the "Ratoon" before I started to draw the lines. Also, there aren't really any gaps in the lines. It's just that my scanner didn't quite pick up some of the lighter ones.

For more information about this tangle, read THIS post.

Today's Tangle - Plaited Star

"Plaited Star" is by Diana Marshall and you'll find the pattern HERE at Pattern-Collections.com. This is the kind of pattern that I enjoy drawing simply for the challenge but not so much for using with other tangles. I made my grid according to the step-out but mine came out looking kind of squished vertically. I'm not sure what I would need to do differently to get the stars to come out evenly shaped like Diana's example image on the pattern. The only thing that I can figure is that there must need to be more space between the rows than is shown on the step-out. If anyone has an idea for how to accomplish this, please let me know.

Ellen Wolters has a video about this pattern HERE.

Classic Zentangle® - Courant, Ratoon, Tipple & Xircus

There was no prompt for this tile. I just wanted to do a Zentangle on my own featuring "Ratoon" along with some other official tangles. I kept "Ratoon" pretty simple but filled it with "Tipple".

These are all of the tangles that I used:

Courant - I blogged about "Courant" HERE.

Ratoon - I blogged about "Ratoon" HERE.

Tipple - I blogged about "Tipple" HERE.

Xircus - I blogged about "Xircus" HERE.

Today's Tangles - A few more Ratoons

Read my original post HERE for more information about this official Zentangle pattern called "Ratoon".

I went a little crazy embellishing the tile above. The tile below has some of my experiments with this pattern. I don't like the one in the lower right corner all that much but I really like the one on the left. You can see that teardrop shapes work great for around the outside of the "Ratoon". They don't work for the inside though. I tried it once and the loopy strands don't connect right.

Classic Zentangle® - Ambler, Beelight, Diva Dance Waltz, Printemps & Schway

The prompt for today's tile was to draw a string that divided the tile into thirds with a sort of letter "H" turned on its side. It looked like this:

These are the tangles that I used:

Ambler - I blogged about "Ambler" HERE.

Beelight - I haven't found an official step-out for "Beelight" but I found one HERE on Flickr. I also found videos HERE, HERE and HERE.

Diva Dance Waltz - The official step-out for "Diva Dance" is posted HERE on the Zentangle blog. You will find a larger version of the step-out HERE on Laura Harms's blog. "Diva Dance Waltz" is the basic version where the lines all go in the same direction. There are a lot of videos about "Diva Dance" but I only found two that feature the "Waltz" version. They are HERE and HERE.

UPDATE 5/25/23: I've removed the link to Laura Harms' website because it is infected with a virus.

Printemps - I blogged about "Printemps" HERE.

Schway - I blogged about "Schway" HERE.
