Monday's Tangle - Harfe

I blogged about this pattern called "Harfe" once before HERE. I drew today's tile while trying to come up with an idea for my Dad's birthday card. I ended up using a different pattern on his card which I will show you in a few days.

This pattern is by Jennifer Hohensteiner CZT and it's posted HERE at TanglePatterns.com. Her step-out is also HERE on flickr and MimiXY has a YouTube video tutorial HERE. I followed the step-out from TanglePatterns.com.

Sunday's Tangle - Splitzer

"Splitzer" is from Cindy Angiel and you'll find the step-out and a video HERE on her website. I went a little color crazy on my tile and I think it might be fun to fill each of the spaces between the ribbons with a variety of tangles.

Saturday's Tangles - Amy Diamonds & Crimpster

"Amy Diamonds" is by Diana Marshall and her pattern is HERE at Pattern-Collections.com. Dawn Collins has a video on this pattern HERE. I like how this one turned out except for the white charcoal pencil highlights that I added. I decided not to erase them because I'd have to do the shading over again if I did.

UPDATE: The Pattern-Collections website has shut down. Click HERE to view this pattern.

This is Cindy Angiel's "Crimpster" and you can find her pattern HERE on her website. You'll also find a video tutorial there. Mine look a bit like snowflakes so I added some metallic silver "sparkles" in the background to simulate more snowflakes. I used a metallic gold Gelly Roll pen on the larger flakes as well as some silver dots just for fun.

Friday's Tangles - Fragment T5 & Diva Dance Rock'n Roll

Both of today's tangles were featured in the Zentangle Project Pack #03 video series. You can watch the series HERE on the  Zentangle® YouTube channel.

Molly Hollibaugh showed how to draw "Fragment T5" in THIS second video of the series. This fragment comes from the "
Zentangle® Primer Vol. 1" which you can read about HERE on their website. I drew today's tile with two rows of this fragment.

Here is a scan of my Project Pack #03 Part 2 drawing showing this fragment:

I combined "Diva Dance" and its variation called "Diva Dance Rock'n Roll" on this tile. "Diva Dance Rock'n Roll" was featured HERE in part three of the video series and below is my drawing from the project. The step-outs for both versions of "Diva Dance" can be found HERE on the
Zentangle® blog.

Thursday's Tangle - Center Patterns #0211

"Center Patterns #0211" looked like a challenge but it turned out that it wasn't difficult to draw at all and I thoroughly enjoyed drawing it. I found the pattern HERE on Julianna Kunstler's site. It's meant to be a sort of folded ribbon design but I thought it would be fun to cut out the center. I liked it so well that I drew another one that you can see below. I drew the second one with thicker lines because it is harder to draw very thin lines neatly.

Wednesday's Tangles - Purdy, Xerexez & Toodles Flower Revisited

"Purdy" is by Margaret Bremner CZT. There is no step-out, probably because it's simply a rice-shaped spiral design. You can see Margaret's examples of "Purdy" HERE on her blog. It makes a very nice filler tangle but I think it also works well as a ribbon. I had thought about drawing an aura on either side of mine but decided to try that another time.

"Xerexez" is by Cindy Angiel and the step-out is HERE on her blog. Cindy also shows how to draw it in THIS video on YouTube.

You'll find "Toodles Flower Revisited" HERE at Pattern-Collections.com. It's by Tauriel Tolkin.

Tuesday's Tangle - Way Knot

I decided to try drawing "Way Knot" again to try out some of the alternative drawing methods that I mentioned HERE in my previous post about this pattern. I've decided that my original method works the best for me but I did find that a pencil "X" in each square of the grid was useful for lining things up. This time I managed to get my interior loops to mostly touch each other as they're supposed to.

"Way Knot" is by Helen Williams and her step-out is posted HERE on her A Little Lime blog. She also has a video tutorial for the pattern HERE.

Monday's Tangle - Toodles Flower

This pattern is called "Toodles Flower" and is by Ina Sonnenmoser. The pattern is found HERE at Pattern-Collections.com. MimiXY has a video HERE. As you can see, I had some fun trying different things with this design. The two small yellow ones were drawn according to the pattern.

Sunday Tangles - Shockle & Star-ING

"Shockle" is by Cindy Angiel and her pattern is found HERE at Pattern-Collections.com. I'm not all that keen on how mine turned out but Melinda Barlow CZT has a video HERE with some other interesting ways of using this pattern.

UPDATE: The Pattern-Collections website has shut down. Click HERE to view this pattern.

Staub Korn's "Star-ING" pattern is found HERE at Pattern-Collections.com. Melinda also has a video for this pattern HERE. First I tried this curvy version above that is shown on the step-out. I don't think that the detail shows up well enough on the dark card stock that I used. I like the example below better.

Saturday's Tangle - Nin-Nio

I enjoyed drawing and coloring this cute pattern called "Nin-Nio" which is by Verena Bossert.
I had seen a colorful example similar to this on Facebook and liked the effect. The pattern is posted HERE at Pattern-Collections.com.

Friday's Tangle - Luup Puffs

I had a lot of fun drawing this tangle called "Luup Puffs" by Cheryl Lees-Haley. I turned mine into grosgrain ribbons embellished with pale blue pearls and tiny strands of beads in the background.

You can find Cheryl's pattern HERE at Pattern-Collections.com. Dawn Collins has a video HERE and Melinda Barlow CZT has one HERE.

Thursday's Tangle - Ila

"Ila" is by Cyndi Knapp and, not surprisingly, her inspiration was tatted lace. You'll find her step-out HERE at TanglePatterns.com. Melinda Barlow CZT has a video tutorial for this pattern HERE. I embellished each of my strings in different ways and added touches of metallic gold gel pen.

Sunday's Tangle - A-dazy

"A-dazy" is by Lindy Clarkson and you'll find her pattern HERE at Pattern-Collections.com. Dawn Collins has a YouTube video for this pattern HERE. I enjoyed drawing the sample tile that you see above so I drew two more using different embellishments and colors.

Saturday's Tangle - Harvey

I drew one more tile with "Harvey (Random)" and I've definitely got the hang of it now. I just need to work a bit on the spacing between the flowers.

This pattern is by Sarah Fowler and her step-out is found HERE at TanglePatterns.com.

If you'd like to see some wonderful examples of "Harvey", check out Emiko Kaneko CZT's Instagram page. Click HERE, HERE, HERE and HERE for some tiles featuring this pattern. It was her beautiful artwork that inspired me to keep trying to learn this tangle. While you're there, be sure to browse through the rest of her photos for even more inspiration.

Friday Tangles - Harvey & HÖRNCHEN

I mentioned in THIS previous post that I had been having trouble drawing this random version of the pattern called "Harvey". I gave it another go and it finally clicked. I'm glad about that because I like this version even better than the ribbon one.

"Harvey (Random)" is by Sarah Fowler and her step-out is found HERE at TanglePatterns.com.

This pattern is called "HÖRNCHEN" and is by Staub Korn. Her step-out is posted HERE on Facebook. I liked her variation that has an outline around it so that's how I drew mine.

Thursday Tangles - Lisbon & S'irin

"Lisbon" is by Ina Sonnenmoser and her pattern is HERE at Pattern-Collections.com. MimiXY has a video HERE and Dawn Collins has one HERE.

UPDATE: The Pattern-Collections website has shut down. Click HERE to view this pattern.

While drawing my tile, the design reminded me of sea shells so I turned the design sideways and added some "bubbles" to create an underwater scene.

"S'irin" is by Alena Light. You'll find her step-out HERE at Pattern-Collections.com. I couldn't think of a way to use this tangle in a composition so I simply tried it out by drawing a few of them on my tile.

Wednesday Tangles - Ladyzabelle & Way Knot

Lila Holter's "Ladyzabelle" pattern is found HERE at Pattern-Collections.com. I think that those little dots and lines on the ends of the petals add such a cute touch to the design.

UPDATE: The Pattern-Collections website has shut down. Click HERE to view this pattern.

"Way Knot" is by Helen Williams and her step-out is posted HERE on her A Little Lime blog. She also has a video tutorial for the pattern HERE.

This one was a bit of a challenge for me but I stuck with it and did a few of the steps using my own methods. I found it easier to draw the inner lines of the petals on the outside instead of on the inside, if that makes any sense. I also drew my inner loops in reverse order. When I used the method that the pattern suggests, I kept running out of space for them because you just have to sort of guess at the size to draw them. I drew the inside arc first because I knew that they had to line up with and touch the points between the petals. Once they were in place, it was easy enough to just aura them.

Looking again at the step-out, I'm thinking that another way that might work would be to draw that square-ish shape in the center first then draw the rest of the lines from the corners of the "square" to the outer petals.

I find it frustrating trying to follow patterns that make you guess how big to make things without any sort of guides to line things up with because I usually end up running out of space. I always look at patterns closely before I try them out to see if there might be an easier way to draw them. With this particular pattern, I can also see one more trick that might make it easier. That would be to draw a big "X" in pencil from the inside points of the petals and crossing at the center dot. The "X" would mark where the loops should go and that would make it easy to see how much space you have for drawing them.

Tuesday Tangles - Bysomnus & Emoball

"Bysomnus" is by Milde Weiss and her pattern is posted HERE at TanglePatterns.com. I drew mine similar to the way she drew the pattern in her example tile. I found a video tutorial HERE.

"Emoball" is from Tomàs Padrós. His step-out is found HERE at Pattern-Collections.com and also HERE on Instagram. Melinda Barlow CZT has a video HERE. I couldn't think of a clever way to use them so I just drew a few of them with different shaped mouths.

Sunday Tangles

This is Sandra Hoffner's pattern called "Tessa". You'll find the pattern HERE at Pattern-Collections.com. Dawn Collins has a video about it HERE. I tried something a little different on my tile. Instead of shading the individual "tiles" with graphite in the usual way, I erased most of the shading just leaving a hint of it. I then went over the edges of each square with an ivory colored pencil to give them a yellowed aged look. I also added some extra embellishments as well as metallic gold accents and some clear glitter.

UPDATE: The Pattern-Collections website has shut down. Click HERE to view this pattern.

"Starawn" is by Judy Murphy and her step-out is found HERE on Flickr. I found a video tutorial HERE. As you can see, it looks very dramatic when drawn with a gold metallic gel pen on a black tile.

Jennifer Hohensteiner's "Swells" pattern is found HERE at TanglePatterns.com. I used colored pencils and blended the pigment with odorless mineral spirits to simulate watercolors.

"Verve" is by JJ LaBarbera and her step-out is HERE on her Tinker Tangles blog. I also found a video HERE.
