Today's Tangle - Schilfertjes

I have no idea how to pronounce today's pattern which is called "Schilfertjes". It's by Nicole Dreyer and her pattern is posted HERE at Pattern-Collections.com. MimiXY has a video about this pattern HERE and Dawn Collins has one HERE. Dawn attempts to pronounce the name of it in her video and she explains what the word means.

UPDATE: The Pattern-Collections website has shut down. Click HERE to view this pattern.

Although I drew the basic framework as directed by the step-out, I embellished mine differently and I think it has an interesting look.

Today's Tangle - Nocera

"Nocera" is by Ina Sonnenmoser and her step-out is posted HERE at Pattern-Collections.com. MimiXY has a video about this pattern HERE and Dawn Collins has one HERE. I found it to be a little tricky getting started, the first two spirals in particular, but the rest wasn't too difficult to draw. I went crazy and filled up the whole border on my tile. I started with a square pencil border to help keep me from filling up the entire tile.

Today's Tangle - Gommi

"Gommi" is a tangle by Carole Ohl and you'll find her step-out HERE on her blog. I wasn't sure if there is supposed to be a repeating pattern so I drew mine randomly.

Today's Tangle - U-2

This beautiful tangle is called "U-2" and is by Tangle Dream. Her name, or nickname perhaps, appears to be BB or Bibby. She is a CZT and she lives in Korea. As far as I know there is no published step-out so you'll have to watch THIS video on Tangle Dream's YouTube channel to learn how to draw it. She has example photos posted HERE on her blog and also HERE on Instagram.

I drew the tile above first to try out the pattern. It was surprisingly easy and enjoyable to draw so I drew another tile on a very small grid this time.

Today's Tangle - Forest

"Forest" is by Helen Brown and you'll find her pattern HERE at TanglePatterns.com. The step-out shows a wonky variation that might be fun to try sometime.

Today's Tangle - PiCanta

I found this interesting pattern called "PiCanta" HERE at Pattern-Collections.com. It's by Ulima Dennhardt. MimiXY has a YouTube video HERE.

UPDATE: The Pattern-Collections website has shut down. Click HERE to view this pattern.

I almost gave up on this pattern after drawing the first step as shown on the step-out because it's not a very intuitive way to draw this design. Instead of abandoning it, I decided to see if I could figure out an easier way to draw it and I did. I start by drawing a big curvy "V" shape. It felt very natural then to add the "D" shaped petals that swoop down to the bottom and form the small "V" shapes on either side. It also works well to draw from the bottom up. I found that out when I had to draw a partial shape that was going off the edge of my tile.

After finding a new way to draw this pattern, I wasn't sure what to do with it. I drew a few samples of it in the flower shape that you'll see on the step-out but I really wanted something a little different. So, I drew the shapes along a string. I think they look very fun this way, especially with the diamonds that I drew in the empty spaces between them on the string.

I enjoyed drawing "PiCanta" so much that I also drew the tile below. If you look closely, you'll see that I had some color issues. I was using metallic colored pencils and the magenta one apparently has too much pigment and it turned my cream color tile pink and left some ugly smudges here and there. My hand must have been smearing the color around as I was drawing. I like it so I didn't scrap it. I drew these with some whimsical touches. I originally colored the gold bits with a metallic gold colored pencil but decided later to go over them with a metallic gold gel pen. I didn't add any shading to either of these tiles simply because I thought it would be distracting.

Today's Tangle - Satin & Silk

This pattern is called "Satin & Silk". It's by Alice Hendon and the step-out is posted HERE on her blog. It's near the bottom of the page. I added some black "pearls" to mine.

Today's Tangle - Well Well Who by Zentangle®

"Well Well Who" is a new tangle by Maria Thomas. I heard about it on Facebook a few weeks ago but hadn't seen any instructions for drawing it. On Thursday, Melinda Barlow CZT posted a YouTube video that shows how to draw it and later that afternoon I got the Zentangle newsletter in my email and there was the official step-out.

This is so much fun to draw and I'm very pleased with my first attempt. I kept it pretty basic but I did add some sparkles.

You can watch Melinda's video HERE and download the step-out HERE on the Zentangle site.

UPDATE 3/25/19: I found another video HERE on Zen Linea's Instagram page.

You may have noticed that "Well Well Who" is a lot like another tangle called "Stella". Although the basic concept is the same for both of them, the methods for drawing them are different and "Well Well Who" has several additional features not seen in "Stella". You can take a look at Jana Rogers CZT's "Stella" step-out HERE at TanglePatterns.com. Below is an example of "Stella" that I drew a while back.

Classic Zentangle® - Bales, Cubine, Emingle, Hibred & Knightsbridge

The string for this Today’s Tangles: Keeping It Classic prompt was a series of concentric squares that ultimately extend off the edge of the tile. At the time I was drawing this, I wasn't sure how "Cubine" would work as a border around the "Bales". However, after spending a long time on the shading, I was quite happy with the outcome.

These are the tangles that I used:

Bales - I blogged about "Bales" HERE.

Cubine - I blogged about "Cubine" in THIS post.

Emingle - Read THIS post for information about "Emingle".

Hibred - I blogged about "Hibred" HERE.

Knightsbridge - Read about "Knightsbridge" in THIS post.

Today's Tangle - In-N-Out Folded

I found this pattern called "In-N-Out Folded" HERE at Pattern-Collections.com. It's by Diana Marshall. I enjoy drawing patterns like this because the shading makes them look so amazingly 3-dimensional.

Today's Tangle - Deeday

This tangle by Angie Gittles CZT is called "Deeday" and you'll find it HERE at TanglePatterns.com. I added some extra embellishments to my tile as well as a little color.

Today's Tangle - Creamy

"Creamy" is by Katia Parrett CZT and her step-out can be found HERE at TanglePatterns.com. There are lots of ways to embellish this grid pattern but I decided to keep mine kind of simple.

Today's Tangle - Birds on a Wire

This tangle called "Birds on a Wire" is by Mary Kissel CZT and the step-out is posted HERE on her blog. Rather than drawing a realistic drop shadow, I added just a hint of one. One of the many things that I like about Zentangle is that there is no need to worry about making anything look "real". It's all about having fun with your art and creating interesting effects with designs and shading within a very small, manageable space.

Classic Zentangles® - Hurry, Ixorus & Shattuck

I drew two tiles for this prompt on the Today's Tangles: Keeping it Classic Facebook group. The string for the week was to start with four woven bands drawn Hollibaugh style across the tile. I drew the tile above first but wasn't sure if I liked "Ixorus" in the background so I drew the tile below using "Hurry" instead. I used the straight version of "Shattuck" on both tiles. There are things that I like about both tiles and I'm not sure which one I like best.

These are the tangles that I used:

Hurry - I blogged about "Hurry" in THIS post.

Ixorus - I blogged about "Ixorus" HERE.

Shattuck - You'll find info about "Shattuck" in THIS post.

Today's Tangle - Ziggle

This is actually my variation of a pattern called "Ziggle" which is by Chase Messineo. You'll find his step-out HERE at TanglePatterns.com. I started drawing it as directed but then embellished it in a different way and I also drew auras around mine.

Today's Tangle - WUD

"WUD" is by Joni Feddersen CZT and her step-out is posted HERE on Margaret Bremner's blog. This was a lot of fun to draw so I filled my whole tile with it.

Official Zentangle® Pattern - Well, Well, Well

This is a variation of the official tangle called "Well" which I blogged about HERE. There is no step-out for it but Rick and Maria have a video on the Zentangle Mosaic app that shows how to draw this crazy version of "Well". If you aren't a member on the app, you can watch Melinda Barlow's video HERE.

Today's Tangle - W3

"W3" is by Mei Hua Teng (Damy) CZT and her step-out is found HERE at TanglePatterns.com. Her inspiration was the official Zentangle pattern called "W2" not the Zentangle fragment called "W3". I used pastel colors on mine that remind me of spring and Easter.

Today's Tangle - Voga

This tangle is called "Voga" and is by my beading friend Carole Ohl CZT. The step-out is posted HERE on Carole's blog. I drew the curved version. Although I drew mine as a ribbon, this would be great as a filler.

Today's Tangle - Typzi

"Typzi" is by Sue Schneider CZT. The pattern is posted HERE at TanglePatterns.com. The step-out suggests embellishing these so I embellished each of mine in a different way.

Today's Tangle - MEI

"MEI" is by Hsin-Ya Hsu CZT and her step-out is posted HERE at TanglePatterns.com. The design reminded me of ceramic tiles so I shaded mine to enhance that look.

Thursday, March 7, 2019

Classic Zentangle® - Printemps & Tipple

The prompt for this tile was to draw a very large "Printemps" string that filled the tile. We had a choice of patterns to fill the spiral with and I filled mine completely with "Printemps" and "Tipple".

Printemps - Read THIS post for more information about "Printemps".

Tipple - I blogged about "Tipple" HERE.

Today's Tangle - Haley's Hearts

Classic Zentangle® - Drawings, Nipa, Shattuck & Warble

I drew this tile for a Z-string prompt in the Today's Tangles: Keeping it Classic Facebook group. I had already drawn two other tiles for this prompt but this time I challenged myself to try using "Drawings". I hadn't drawn it before and it wasn't easy to come up with a way to work it in with the other tangles. I think I was somewhat successful.

These are the tangles that I used:

Drawings - There is an official step-out for "Drawings" HERE in the Zentangle newsletter. I found five videos HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE and HERE.

Nipa - I have blogged about "Nipa" before and you can read my post HERE.

Shattuck - I blogged about "Shattuck" HERE.

Warble - I blogged about "Warble" HERE.

Today's Tangle - Fan-Thing

"Fan-Thing" is by Freda Littleton who is a member of some of the tangling Facebook groups that we both belong to. Unfortunately, her step-out is posted in a closed group so I can't link to it. My tile actually consists of eight "Fan-Things" arranged inside my border. Usually when Freda features "Fan-Thing" in her amazing drawings, the fan blades are quite long and thin compared to the ones in my example above.

Freda's look more like this:
