Today's Tangle - Eva Wu's Video #1193

When I saw Eva's example tile that she posted on Facebook and on the Zentangle app, I thought it was so pretty that I simply had to give it a try. There is no step-out, just her wonderful video which you can watch HERE.

I don't know what size tile Eva drew hers on but I prefer to draw on 3.5 x 3.5 inch tiles. This turned out to be a little too small when drawing this design with a white gel pen on a black tile. The lines came out too thick and there wasn't enough space for everything. Rather than give up on the project, I decided to draw it with a black pen on a beige tile. I think it came out just as pretty and I was able to squeeze in all of the special little details. I colored the rosettes and leaves with metallic colored pencils. I added a little color to the ribbons with colored pencil and white charcoal pencil. I colored the orbs with a metallic gold Gelly Roll pen. What you can't see is that I also went over the flowers and leaves with a clear glitter pen for some fun sparkle.

I drew mine pretty close to the same as Eva's video but I simplified my rosettes a little because I drew them so small. I start with a little spiral "snail" then I add just three petals around the perimeter of the spiral.

Today's Tangle - T2T

"T2T" is by Tomàs Padrós and the step-out is posted HERE on Facebook. It's also posted HERE on Instagram. I was pleasantly surprised that this turned out so well. I did draw some pencil guidelines to help with the placement of the components.

Today's Tangle - Zin

"Zin" is by Linda Farmer and the pattern is HERE at TanglePatterns. Linda shows her example with the fan shapes facing downward. I liked the look of it the other way around as you see it above. Below you can see how looks facing Linda's way.

Classic Zentangle® - Dewd & Tipple

I drew this tile for a prompt in the Today's Tangles: Keeping it Classic Facebook group. Below you can see the string that I used.

These are the tangles that I used:

Dewd - I blogged about "Dewd" HERE.

Tipple - I blogged about "Tipple" HERE.

Today's Tangle - Fireworks-Swirl

This fun pattern called "Fireworks-Swirl" is by Katja Haarmann. The step-out is found HERE at Pattern-Collections. Mimi has a video HERE and Dawn Collins has one HERE.

UPDATE: The Pattern-Collections website has shut down. Click HERE to view this pattern.

To make the tiny silver "beads", I made dots with a metallic silver gel pen then added a very light graphite shadow below each one. Without the shadows they were almost invisible on my gray tile.

Today's Tangle - 4C Ruiten

"4C Ruiten" is by Nicole Dreyer and the pattern is posted HERE at Pattern-Collections. Ellen Wolters has a video about this pattern HERE

UPDATE: The Pattern-Collections website has shut down. Click HERE to view this pattern.

I drew mine in a pencil grid with each of the shapes filling one square on the grid and with one empty square between them. Make sure that you use a grid with an odd number of squares so that you end up with one of the shapes in each corner. As you can see from my two examples, you can get a completely different look depending on where you add shading and color. Rotating the tile in a different direction also effects the way that it looks. I shaded the tile below to make it look as if the diamond shapes have been cut out of the brown paper.

Today's Tangle - Kalido

"Kalido" is by Linda Rea and her step-out is posted HERE on flickr. I started with a 12 x 12 grid in pencil. I filled the squares with a metallic silver gel pen and I colored the triangles with colored pencil. I didn't add any shading because I thought it would detract from the design.

Today's Tangle - SoulT

"SoulT" is by Jennifer Hohensteiner CZT and you'll find the pattern HERE on her blog. I don't often use such bright colors but I love how they pop on this dark yellow paper.

Today's Tangle - Wooti

I blogged about Ria Matheussen's "Wooti" earlier this month HERE. I wanted to give it another try and drew "rays" on all of the squares this time.

Today's Tangle - Nin-Nio

I drew another tile for the Day 8 prompt in the ValenTangle 2020 Facebook group. You can join the group HERE. The prompt was to draw either a new or familiar tangle and add hearts to it. This time I used one of my favorite patterns which is called "Nin-Nio" and is by Verena Bossert. Her pattern is posted HERE at Pattern-Collections.

Today's Tangle - Bales

I drew this tile for the Day 8 prompt in the ValenTangle 2020 Facebook group. You can join the group HERE. The prompt was to draw either a new or familiar tangle and add hearts to it. I used the official Zentangle pattern called "Bales" and filled the cells with little "red hot" hearts. For more information about "Bales", read THIS post.

ValenTangle 2020 Day 6 - Islamic Geometry String

I drew this tile for the Day 6 prompt in the ValenTangle 2020 Facebook group. You can join the group HERE. Once I had drawn the string, I filled it in with no tangles in particular. I colored it with colored pencils and a metallic gold gel pen. The prompt called for using four Bijou tiles. I drew mine on a standard 3 1/2 x 3 1/2 inch tile which I divided into quarters to give the effect of four smaller tiles.

Today's Tangle - Minstrels with Hearts

I drew this tile for the Day 3 prompt in the ValenTangle 2020 Facebook group. You can join the group HERE.

The tangle for this prompt is a variation of a pattern called "Minstrels" and is drawn with hearts instead of squares. I couldn't find a step-out online for "Minstrels" but it's identical to another pattern called "Demi" which is by Geneviève Crabe. The step-out for "Demi" is posted HERE at TanglePatterns.

UPDATE: You'll find the step-out for "Minstrels" HERE.

Today's Tangles - V&A and Rosé

I drew this tile for the Day 1 prompt in the ValenTangle 2020 Facebook group. You can join the group HERE. The tangle for Day 1 is called "V&A" and is seen in the ribbon going across my tile. It is by Marguerite Samama and the step-out is posted on the group page. The background pattern is called "Rosé" and is by Linda Farmer. Her pattern is posted HERE at TanglePatterns.

Today's Tangle - Wooti

"Wooti" is by Ria Matheussen CZT and you'll find her step-out HERE at TanglePatterns. I wasn't sure if this pattern would work as a border but it kind of does. I added the white outlines on the black squares because otherwise there were just big blobs in the corners because two black squares merge there.

Today's Tangle - Trinity

"Trinity" is a challenging pattern by Stephanie Kiefhaber CZT. Her step-out is posted HERE at TanglePatterns. Tangle Dream has a video HERE where she makes "Trinity" look deceptively easy to draw.

My attempts to draw "Trinity" by following the step-out and the video weren't successful. However, the other day I was browsing the ValenTangle 2020 Facebook group where this pattern is the prompt for Day 2 and something made me see the design differently. Instead of starting by drawing the "holes", I wondered what would happen if I started by drawing the outline of the entire shape first. Today's tile is the result. I found it much easier to gauge the size and placement of the holes and the width of the loops this way. The shape of mine came out a bit wonky but I should be able to fix that issue with more practice.

Today's Tangle - Thing in the middle of a thing

This crazy-looking pattern called "Thing in the middle of a thing" is by Linda Rea. The step-out is posted HERE at Pattern-Collections and HERE on Flickr. Instead of drawing each component individually, I started with a zigzag line across my tile then filled in each "V" as directed by the pattern.

Today's Tangle - My First Mandala

This is my very first mandala and I'm very pleased with it. I didn't follow any particular pattern or use any particular tangles. I just started in the middle and worked my way to the outside by drawing whatever designs came to mind as I went along. After adding some shading, I added touches of blue colored pencil and some metallic gold gel pen.

To make a circular pencil grid, I started by drawing pencil lines from corner to corner of my 3.5 x 3.5 inch tile to mark the center. I printed and cut out cardstock circle templates in several sizes and traced some of them on my tile to create rings of various widths. I also divided the grid into twelve equal wedges. I didn't use any precision drawing tools but my goal wasn't perfection. I just wanted to make a pretty design and have fun creating it.

Today's Tangle - The Italian Tangle Video Tutorial

I followed THIS YouTube lesson by Romi Marks (Tangled Yogi) to draw today's tile which I will give to a friend. I blogged about the nearly identical tile below back in October HERE. Both are 3 1/2 x 3 1/2 inch tiles but this time I used slightly different colors.
