Today's Tangle - Bayken

"Bayken" is one of my favorite tangles to draw and I have blogged about it a couple of times before HERE and HERE. "Bayken" came from a Deviant Art page by TheLonelyMaiden that is no longer online. Luckily, there is a picture of the step-out HERE on Pinterest. I draw it in a pencil grid which I erase later. I embellished the tile above with a metallic gold Gelly Roll.

Above you can see my very first tile featuring "Bayken". Just for fun I recreated it on the tile below and packed them more closely together this time.

Today's Tangle - Chimidle

"Chimidle" is a fun pattern by Cindy Angiel and the step-out is posted HERE, HERE and HERE. Cindy has a video HERE and Dawn Collins has one HERE.

You can see my first attempt at drawing this pattern below. I was quite pleased with it at the time but this time I wanted to use the pattern in a composition. Today's tile features three strands of "Chimidle" with a background of gold spirals. Surprisingly, the background doesn't look too bad considering that the light was very poor when I drew this tile and I could barely see the spirals that I was drawing due to the glare from my lamp.

Today's Tangle - Naida

I don't think that there is a very dramatic improvement in my drawing of today's tile over the original tile which you can see down below and which I blogged about HERE. I do think that my lines aren't quite as wonky and I strung them like beads this time.

Please disregard the odd color cast on the shading in both tiles. My scanner reacted with the cream colored paper and turned the gray of the graphite to a sort of peachy pink color. If I try to edit it out, it affects the other colors too much so I don't bother. I suspect that it has something to do with the problem that computers have interpreting the color red. Red tends to be over-emphasized and it often "bleeds" in digital graphics. Apparently this cream color contains enough red in it to make it react with the gray of the graphite in an unpleasant way.

"Naida" is by Stephanie Jennifer. Her step-out is HERE on her blog and you can watch her YouTube tutorial HERE. Laura Harms also has a video for this tangle HERE.

Today's Tangle - Balloya

As you can see, I'm back on my computer. Apparently there was nothing wrong with it hardware-wise but they cleaned out some viruses and spyware. So far everything seems to be fine. I do plan to have a new computer built soon though because this one is ancient and I'm still using Windows XP.

For the next few days I will be blogging about some tangles that I have drawn before in my early days of tangling. I thought it would be fun to draw these tangles again and then compare them with the older versions. With today's tangle I can really see how much my drawing skill has improved over time. I do remember how challenging "Balloya" was for me to draw back then. Now it's easy and fun. I flipped the design upside down when I scanned my new tile because I think it looks more interesting this way up.

Here is my original tile featuring "Balloya":

"Balloya" is by Anya Lothrop CZT and her step-out is found HERE at Musterquelle. Bunte Gallerie has a video HERE and Melinda Barlow CZT has one HERE.

Update

If you are wondering why I haven't posted anything since Friday, that's because my computer crashed just moments after uploading Friday's post. My computer is in the shop and I don't know yet if it can be repaired or if I will have to buy a new computer. In the meantime, I am able to access my email and do a few other basic things from my husband's computer but I have no way to scan or edit my drawings.

Today's Tangle - Icthus

"Icthus" is by Neil Burley and you'll find his step-out HERE on his blog.

I blogged about this pattern once before HERE and I remember having a little trouble getting the "fish tails" to line up nicely the first time. So, this time I did something a bit different. It's hard to see the grid in Neil's step-out but you definitely should draw this in a grid with each fish filling one square diagonally. Instead of drawing each fish in a single stroke, I started by drawing a pencil dot in each square where the tail and body should intersect. Then, I drew squares by connecting each set of four adjacent dots. Next I added the seed shapes for the fish bodies. I got neater results drawing them this way.

Today's Tangle - Floral Waves

"Floral Waves" is by Svetlana Krasnobay and the pattern is posted HERE at Pattern-Collections.com. There are three video links posted there as well. I have blogged about this pattern before and you can see my previous tile HERE.

UPDATE: The Pattern-Collections website has shut down. Click HERE to view this pattern.

I drew today's tile more like the step-out than my previous example. However, I did make one change. Instead of drawing orbs for the flower centers, I drew half moons. When I tried drawing it with orbs, I kept getting an annoying gap next to the first and last petals. Using half moons eliminated that issue and I think it looks just as cute this way.

Today's Tangle - Showgirl

I used a metallic gold gel pen to draw the dots on the petals. Some of the shading was done with a colored pencil a shade or two darker than the paper color. I blended the colored pencil with odorless mineral spirits.

"Showgirl" is by Vicki Bassett and the pattern is posted HERE at TanglePatterns.com. Mary's Zen Doodle Art had a video about this tangle HERE. Melinda Barlow CZT has two videos HERE and HERE.

Today's Tangle - Showgirl

"Showgirl" is a tangle that I tried in my early tangling days and didn't have much luck with it. Lately I've been going back and re-trying some of those challenging tangles and this time I found it quite easy to draw. "Showgirl" is by Vicki Bassett and the pattern is posted HERE at TanglePatterns.com. Mary's Zen Doodle Art has a video about this tangle HERE. Melinda Barlow CZT has two videos HERE and HERE. Check back tomorrow for a more subdued version of "Showgirl"

Classic Zentangle® - Bales, Dex, Ellish, Printemps & Shattuck

I drew this tile for a prompt in the Today's Tangles: Keeping it Classic Facebook group. The prompt was to use our chop as the string. I didn't have a chop but I came up with one while drawing this tile and you can see it in the bottom corner. It just happened that "Ellish" was on the tangle list for the week and it was the perfect tangle to use with my cursive "L" chop.

These are the tangles that I used:

Bales - I blogged about "Bales" HERE.

Dex - I blogged about "Dex" HERE.

Ellish - I blogged about "Ellish" HERE.

Printemps - I blogged about Printemps HERE.

Shattuck - I blogged about "Shattuck" HERE.

Today's Tangle - Full Moon Mosaic Video Tutorial

This video lesson by Romi Marks is called the "Full Moon Mosaic Zentangle Class" and you can watch the video HERE. I changed a few things on my tile. I split the center circle into four flowers instead of three and I omitted the rounding in the corner sections.

Because of the dark kraft paper that I was drawing on, I used a slightly different coloring technique than you will see in the video. I filled each segment with three colors in such a way as to make the colors very bold. The red sections have a combination of red, orange and a hint of yellow. The turquoise sections have a pretty shade of turquoise along with a darker blue and some lime green. The white accents were drawn with a white Gelly Roll pen.

I have followed five of Romi's videos so far but there are still about ten more to try.

Today's Tangle - Tranzending with Wallpaper Video Tutorial

Once again, I followed a video class by Romi Marks. This one is called "Tranzending with Wallpaper" and you can watch it HERE. I pretty much used the same colors that Romi uses in the video but in more muted tones.

Today's Tangle - Bonnie & Henna Drum Video Tutorial

I drew this tile by following THIS video tutorial by Romi Marks (Tangled Yogi). I'm very pleased with the eye-popping colors that I used this time. I also drew this one on a 3 1/2 x 3 1/2 inch tile.

Today's Tangle - Bonnie & Henna Drum Video Tutorial

I drew this tile by following another video tutorial by Romi Marks (Tangled Yogi). This one features the tangles "Bonnie" and "Henna Drum" and you can watch the video HERE. Romi draws hers on an Apprentice size tile but you can see that it also works perfectly on a regular 3 1/2 x 3 1/2 inch tile.

I wasn't entirely happy with my color choices for this project so I drew another one that I will show you tomorrow.

Today's Tangle - The Italian Tangle Video Tutorial

This was a blast to draw and color. I followed THIS YouTube tutorial by Romi Marks (Tangled Yogi). I didn't want to draw this on an Apprentice size tile so I drew a rough practice tile first to get a feel for how to fit everything on a regular 3 1/2 x 3 1/2" tile. It really wasn't too difficult to scale it down. While watching the video, I just ignored the measurements that Romi suggests and paid more attention to the amount of space between the elements as she drew them.

I drew a few of the elements a little differently than suggested in the video. I added one more "Henna Drum" petal on each side of the corner designs. I left the "Tipple" orbs plain but drew some lines on the bars that connect them. I also omitted the swags along the outside border and drew my borders very simply. Although you can't tell this, I drew the "Leafgo" flowers before drawing the "Mookas" because I found that I didn't always have enough space for them if I drew the "Mooka" scrolls first.

I'm hoping to work my way through all of Romi's video lessons because they're so much fun. Back in July, I blogged HERE about some tiles that I drew from her "Southwest Mathura" video lesson.

Official Zentangle® Pattern - Mooka Lace

This isn't really an official tangle because there hasn't been a step-out created for it and I just made up the name. I was inspired by a couple of drawings by Maria Thomas in THIS Zentangle blog post. Perhaps one day Maria will make a pattern for this.
