Zentangle Project Pack 9 Wrap-up

I decided not to fill in the open areas of my project pack tiles with more tangles. Instead I added some shading with my blue colored pencil to give them a more finished look. I also added some "Tipple" to the "Mooka" on my Day 2 tile and I thought you might like to see the final versions of all six tiles.

Zentangle Project Pack 9 - Day 6

ZENTANGLE PROJECT PACK 9 - DAY 6

Today's tile is one of my favorites of the six. I'm very pleased with my "Springkle" and the "Diva Dance" was fun to draw.

Watch the Day 6 video HERE.

These are the tangles that I used:

Diva Dance - I blogged about "Diva Dance" HERE. This is an enhanced version as you will see when you watch the video.

SeZ - I blogged about "SeZ" HERE.

Springkle - I blogged about "Springkle" HERE.

Below you can see how my tile looked before adding the filler tangle.

ZENTANGLE PROJECT PACK 9 - DAY 7

Day 7 is the final day of the project pack series and no more changes are made to the tiles. Rick and Maria explain how to use the Markus Operandus and they show many ways to assemble the tiles into a mosaic.

Zentangle Project Pack 9 - Day 5

ZENTANGLE PROJECT PACK 9 - DAY 5

On today's tile the only part that follows the Day 5 video is the "Zonked" background filler. I used "Dewd" as my border and filled the corners with "Crazy 'Nzeppel". Because my tile is so much smaller than a Zendala tile, I wasn't able to add quite as much detail to the "Zonked" squares as shown in the video.

Watch the Day 5 video HERE.

These are the tangles that I used:

Crazy 'Nzeppel - I blogged about "Crazy 'Nzeppel" HERE.

Dewd - I blogged about "Dewd" HERE.

Zonked - "Zonked" is by  Barbara Finwall and her step-out is posted HERE at TanglePatterns.

Below you can see how my tile looked before adding the filler tangle.

Zentangle Project Pack 9 - Day 2

ZENTANGLE PROJECT PACK 9 - DAY 2

I went totally rogue with my Day 2 tile. In the video, Julie draws "Marasu" with a "Flux" border. I used "Mooka" on mine even though it isn't on the list of organic tangles to use for the project. I filled the area to the right with "Bales" and the corners with "Crescent Moon".

Watch the Day 2 video HERE.

These are the tangles that I used:

Bales - I blogged about "Bales" HERE.

Crescent Moon - I blogged about "Crescent Moon" HERE.

Mooka - I blogged about "Mooka" HERE.

Zentangle Project Pack 9 - Day 1 (starting over)

ZENTANGLE PROJECT PACK 9 - DAY 1

After drawing three tiles as directed by the project pack videos, I realized that I wasn't enjoying the process. I'm not keen on drawing on such large tiles and the round tiles are a bit of a pain to scan and edit. Rather than give up the project completely, I went in another direction keeping some of the main features of the originals. Instead of a green color scheme, I switched to a blue one and I'm drawing on 3.5 x 3.5" square tiles this time. I'm using a blue Micron 05 pen and a blue colored pencil for the coloring and shading. I do realize that my tiles won't work the same way as the round ones in forming a mosaic at the end of the project but that doesn't bother me.

Watch the Day 1 video HERE.

These are the tangles that I used:

Flux - I blogged about "Flux" HERE.

Pokeleaf - I blogged about "Pokeleaf" HERE.

Printemps - I blogged about "Printemps" HERE. It's a little hard to see but I very lightly filled the spaces between the ribbons of "Umble" with "Printemps" in colored pencil.

Umble - I blogged about "Umble" HERE.

Below is a Day 4 tile that I drew before changing to blue.

Today's Tangle - Klaxx

"Klaxx" is by Dörte Seupel-Kör and her pattern is posted HERE at Pattern-Collections. This is the same fragment that is used to draw "Lisette" by Rosemary Turpin but the fragments are arranged differently in the grid to create a different design. I blogged about "Lisette" HERE. I couldn't resist filling the empty squares with metallic bronze spirals.

Today's Tangle - Further Lines

"Further Lines" is by Silke Wagner and you'll find the step-out HERE at Pattern-Collections.

UPDATE: The Pattern-Collections website has shut down. Click HERE to view this pattern.

Rather than trying to draw groups of lines as shown in the step-out, and hoping that they all lined up properly, I filled the center area of my tile with horizontal pencil lines that went all the way across with no gaps. Next, I used my pencil to mark where I wanted the bumps to go with pairs of vertical lines, leaving enough space between them to fit the "V" shapes. I traced the horizontal lines with my pen, leaving a gap whenever I came to a vertical line. After that, I added the "V" shapes in pen before erasing the pencil lines.

Zentangle Project Pack 9 - Spring Has Sprung

ZENTANGLE PROJECT PACK 9 - PREPARATION DAY

A new Zentangle project pack series began on Friday and you can buy Project Pack 9 HERE. If you don't have the project pack you can use your own materials and download the free Markus Operandus tool HERE. There are two preparation videos that you should watch HERE and HERE.

I don't have the project pack so I cut my own Zendala tiles from card stock called Classic Crest Cover by Neenah and the color is called "Saw Grass". I'm also using Staedtler Triplus pens and the colors are "Green Earth #55" and "Olive Green #57".

On Preparation Day, we got six Zendala tiles ready by drawing a string using the Markus Operandus tool. Next, we drew a Purk-like pod in the small section of each tile and then drew the tangle of our choice along the other string line. I chose to draw "Pokeleaf" on all six of my tiles and you can see an example of one of my tiles at the top of this post. The other tangle choices are "Pokeroot", "Rixty", "Rick's Flux", "Maria's Flux", "Sampson", "Springkle" and "Verdigogh". Maria shows how to draw each tangle in the video.

ZENTANGLE PROJECT PACK 9 - DAY 1

You can watch the Day 1 video HERE. On this day, Molly shows us how to fill the large section of one of our tiles with a variation of the tangle called "Umble". Instead of filling my ribbons with solid green, I chose to fill mine with fine olive green lines. Unfortunately, neither of the greens that I used show up well in my scans and they almost look black.

Today's Tangle - Bounce

"Bounce" is by Ina Sonnenmoser and the pattern is posted HERE at Pattern-Collections. I accented mine with some auras drawn with a pencil and a white gel pen. I colored the half moon shapes with colored pencil and metallic bronze gel pen.

Today's Tangle - Bermuda

"Bermuda" is by Ina Sonnenmoser and her pattern is posted HERE at Pattern-Collections. Dawn Collins has a video HERE

UPDATE: The Pattern-Collections website has shut down. Click HERE to view this pattern.

I drew mine using a different method than on the step-out. I found it too difficult to gauge how long to draw the dashes and how much space to leave between them so that the triangles would come out the shape and size that I wanted and so that there would be enough space between them to draw the adjacent row of triangles. I started with a pencil string consisting of four lines. I drew the two center lines very close together and the two outer lines spaced just far enough away on either side to give me triangles the size that I wanted. I drew the first row of triangles between one of the inner guide lines and the nearest outer guide line. I made sure to leave enough space between the triangles so that tips of the triangles that would go in the opposite direction between them would have enough room. I repeated the same thing with the set of guides on the opposite side.

Today's Tangle - 3Pair

"3Pair" is by Hennie Brouwer and you'll find the pattern HERE at Pattern-Collections. Mimi has a video HERE.

UPDATE: The Pattern-Collections website has shut down. Click HERE to view this pattern.

I drew the tile below first to try out the pattern. I started with a 12 x 12 pencil grid. The circles came out huge because each one filled an entire square of the grid. I decided to draw it again but on a 24 x 24 grid so that more of the design would be visible as you can see on the tile above.

Today's Tangle - Blox

"Blox" is by Hannah Geddes CZT and the step-out is posted HERE on her website. Although it looks as if I have cut out the squares on my tile, I haven't done that. I just happened to color them almost the same color as the background image that I put behind my tile. It's kind of a cool effect, isn't it?

UPDATE 7/5/2011: Hannah has moved her patterns HERE to her Facebook page. Her "Blox" pattern is posted HERE. It is also posted HERE on Pinterest.

Honeycomb Khala Video Class

I enjoyed yesterday's tile so much that I drew another "Honeycomb Khala".

I drew this tile by following the "Honeycomb Khala" video class by Romi Marks on YouTube. You can watch her video HERE. I drew this on a 3.5 x 3.5-inch cream color tile with the corners cropped to make an octagon.

Honeycomb Khala Video Class

I drew today's tile by following the "Honeycomb Khala" video class by Romi Marks on YouTube. You can watch her video HERE.

I drew this on a 3.5 x 3.5-inch cream color tile with the corners cropped to make an octagon. Romi draws hers on a hexagon tile that is a little larger. As you can see, it works just as well with eight spokes/petals as it does with six. I simply had to tweak some of the decorations to fit inside the smaller spaces.

Opally Star Video Class

I drew today's tile by following the "Opally Star" video class by Romi Marks on YouTube. You can watch her video HERE. I drew this on a 3.5 x 3.5 inch kraft paper tile. While I'm pretty happy with how this turned out, it was a nightmare trying to get my white gel pen to cooperate. After doing the coloring, I had to re-trace all of the white lines because the colored pencils had scraped off much of the white ink. It was also quite a challenge drawing the white highlights because the colored pencil resisted the ink so much. I love the look of white ink on dark tiles but I'm not sure if it's worth the frustration involved. By the way, I used the same kind of white gel pen that Romi uses in the video.

Today's Tangle - Calix

"Calix" is by Judy Murphy and you'll find her step-out HERE at TanglePatterns. I drew this on a kraft paper tile using black ink, white charcoal pencil and a blue colored pencil.
