Today's Tangle - Calix

"Calix" is by Judy Murphy and you'll find her step-out HERE at TanglePatterns. Because I drew mine so small, I left off some of the final embellishments shown on the pattern. Tomorrow I will show you a tile drawn more like the step-out.

Today's Tangle - Cake

I blogged about this same pattern yesterday. I omitted the black dots this time after finding that they caused these deep scallops to have an unfortunate appearance.

Tangling on Octagon Tiles

Today's octagon tile features "Rose Window" and "Shiretown". I came up with the bits in between them on the fly as I added things to the tile.

I blogged about Rosemary Turpin's "Rose Window" HERE and Alice Hendon's "Shiretown" HERE.

I created a PDF file with outlines of octagons in various sizes which you can download HERE. The largest octagon template will fit a standard 3.5 x 3.5 inch square tile. The smaller ones can be traced onto your tile to use as guides for drawing tangles inside the octagon tile similar to a mandala grid. I suggest printing them out, gluing them onto heavy card stock and cutting them out for reusable templates.

Tangling on Octagon Tiles

Today's octagon tile is a mixture of tangle ideas that I found online. I'm not super excited with the outcome but it is kind of cute in baby pinks and blues so I decided to go ahead and post it.

Tangling on Octagon Tiles

This time I looked through my stash of tangles for ones that looked like they might work well with this tile shape. I have quite a few more ideas that I'd like to try as well. The tangles that I used on today's tile are "Remo" by Anne Marks and "Layla" by Lila Popcheff. I blogged about "Remo" HERE. You'll find Lila's step-out for "Layla" HERE.

Tangling on Octagon Tiles

Here is another octagon tile, this time drawn on kraft paper and colored with bold colors. I used "Well" in the center and the other designs are bits of some mandala designs that I had seen online. I added some white gel ink to make it pop.

Tangling on Octagon Tiles

Although I love the creations that I have seen online that were drawn on the hexagonal Relaxagon tiles sold by Marguerite Samama, I prefer to draw on the smaller standard 3.5 x 3.5 inch tiles. Also, the hexagon tiles are too big to fit in my tile storage box. I could cut out hexagons from standard square tiles but they would come out a little too small. So, I decided to try making octagon tiles and they work great because all I have to do is crop off the corners of a square tile to make them.

Today's tile was my first experiment with an octagon tile. Inspired by Marguerite's "Square Button Delft" technique, I drew some faux flaps around the outside edge and filled the inside with various fragments in shades of blue. I blogged about this technique HERE.

Today's Tangles - Inspired by Zentangle Project Pack 8

I was so happy with the Project Pack Day 8 tile that I posted yesterday that I decided to do another one but change things up a bit. So, today's tile doesn't really follow the project pack video but it does contain some elements from it such as the triangles filled with the tangle "Well" and some of the border designs.

Zentangle Project Pack No. 08 - Day 8

I drew this on a 3.5x3.5 inch cream colored tile to simulate four triangular tiles arranged in a mosaic. I drew most of it with a brown Micron 01 and the blue details with a Staedtler Fineliner. I did the rest of the coloring with colored pencils and added accent dots with metallic silver and copper gel pens.

You can watch the video for Day 8 HERE.

Today's Tangle - Double D's Tangleation

This is another tile featuring my version of "Double D's". I had fun adding extra details this time. The original version of "Double D's" is by Judy Murphy and the step-out is posted HERE at TanglePatterns.

Below is the step-out for my version.

Today's Tangle - Double D's Tangleation

"Double D's" is by Judy Murphy and the step-out is posted HERE at TanglePatterns. I like some of the variations that are on the step-out but I am not able to see from the step-out how to draw them in a way that makes sense to me or that is easy for me to draw consistently. Instead I came up with a slightly different version that I can draw on a pencil grid. Below is the step-out for my version.

Today's Tangle - Di Aura

This time I started with a grid with larger squares than on yesterday's tile and I filled the tile more. This is so much fun to draw! "Di Aura" is by Hannah Geddes CZT and her pattern is posted HERE on Facebook and HERE on Pinterest.

Today's Tangle - El-Oh-El

"El-Oh-El" is by Joan Stark and her pattern is posted HERE at TanglePatterns. There are lots of ways to embellish this tangle but I drew the basic version from the step-out. Having said that, I did vary the sizes of the loops and added an aura around the whole thing.

Zenbossing

This isn't a specific tangle but more of a technique. To draw today's tile, I followed a video tutorial by Zen Linea which you can watch HERE. I used a 3.5x3.5 inch tile but did my drawing inside a Bijou tile sized square in the center to simulate the tile that Anica draws hers on in the video.

Today's Tangle - Gra-Vee

This zany-looking tangle called "Gra-Vee" is by Laurel Sponseller and I found the step-out HERE at TanglePatterns. I couldn't think of any way to shade or embellish it but I think it's fun enough just the way it is.

In case you're wondering, there are colored speckles embedded in the card stock that I used. It's called "Stardust" by Wausau. I bought it many years ago for making greeting cards and I don't know if they still sell it.

Today's Tangle - Fran

"Fran" is by Shinmi Sato CZT and her pattern is found HERE at TanglePatterns. I drew two examples starting with a pencil grid which I erased later.

Today's Tangle - Eez

"Eez" is by Judy Burkett CZT and her pattern is HERE at TanglePatterns.

ZENTANGLE PROJECT PACK 8 - DAY 5

I cut my own black Zendala tile out of card stock so I had to draw my own string in pencil and white charcoal pencil. I pretty much copied the "Well" string that was shown near the beginning of Part 1 of the Day 5 video. Because I used metallic gel pens instead of the Moonlight pens, I had to simplify my tangles on account of the broader pen tips. I also omitted the shading and highlights because I thought that the metallic ink might get scratched off. I'm very pleased with how it turned out.

You can watch the videos for Day 5 HERE and HERE (there are two of them).

Today's Tangle - Flapper

"Flapper" is by Cheryl Lees-Haley and her pattern is found HERE at TanglePatterns. I drew mine like the ribbon version shown on the step-out.

ZENTANGLE PROJECT PACK 8 - DAY 3

"Tripoli" and "Ahh" on a black 3.5x3.5 inch tile. I used metallic Gelly Roll pens in four colors.

You can watch the video for Day 3 HERE.

Today's Tangle - Fjord

"Fjord" is by Diana von Kaenel CZT and her pattern is posted HERE at TanglePatterns.

ZENTANGLE PROJECT PACK 8 - DAY 2

Instead of inserting a triangular tile into slots on a square Apprentice-size tile as shown in the video, I simply chopped the corners off my triangle-shaped tile and taped it to the front of a 3.5x3.5 inch kraft paper tile. It's kind of hard to see but I filled the "Hollibaugh" strips with "Doodah" in metallic bronze. The dots and accents on the "Well" are also metallic bronze. The blue shading on the "Hollibaugh" is colored pencil which I blended with odorless mineral spirits.

You can watch the video for Day 2 HERE.

Today's Tangle - Heartsmeet

Today's tile also features "Heartsmeet". I'm learning over time to enjoy drawing hearts and this is a fun pattern to draw. Once again I filled the background with glitter ink but in purple and blue this time on a kraft paper tile. I drew the designs on the hearts with a metallic bronze gel pen and added some light shading to give it dimension.

"Heartsmeet" is by Lynn Hensley and her pattern is posted HERE at TanglePatterns.

Today's Tangle - Heartsmeet

"Heartsmeet" is by Lynn Hensley and her pattern is posted HERE at TanglePatterns. I decorated my hearts with a white gel pen and filled the background behind them with a red glitter pen.

ZENTANGLE PROJECT PACK 8 - DAY 1

Zentangle Project Pack 8 started yesterday. This project pack features Gelly Roll Moonlight gel pens which I don't have. Instead I used metallic Gelly Rolls which I have in seven different colors. I used Copper, Gold, Burgundy, Blue Black and Hunter Green. Molly draws "Munchin" on a black Apprentice tile in the video but I used a black 3 1/2 x 3 1/2 inch tile.

You can watch the introductory video for Project Pack 8 HERE and the video for Day 1 HERE. Click HERE for more information about "Munchin". Does anyone know how many videos there will be for this project pack?
