Today's Tangle - Kushee

"Kushee" is by Verena Bossert and her lovely pattern is found HERE at Pattern-Collections.com. This is a fun and easy pattern to draw. I embellished mine with a dot of metallic gel pen in the center of each square.

UPDATE: The Pattern-Collections website has shut down. Click HERE to view this pattern.

Dawn Collins has a video about this pattern HERE.

If you compare the example image on the step-out with the actual steps, you will see that one step is missing. In between steps one and two, you should draw pen lines in each box that go from corner to corner by tracing over the pencil grid lines. Otherwise you will end up with a gap between the radiating lines that are drawn in steps 2-5 and the arcs that are drawn in step six. These gaps are there in step six of the step-out but there are no gaps in the sample image. If you leave those gaps the outcome will look different than the sample.

Today's Tangle - 25 Castle Street

"25 Castle Street" is a grid tangle by Neil Burley and you'll find his step-out HERE on his blog. When I came across this pattern recently, I was surprised that it looked so much like the Zentangle pattern called "Doo Dah". Neil's pattern was published a long time before "Doo Dah" was released and it's actually not quite the same. It's like a single repeat of "Doo Dah" used as a fragment.

Instead of filling the center squares on my tile as shown on the step-out, I filled mine with the Zentangle fragment D4 or maybe it's more like fragment K2. You can see D4 HERE at Musterquelle and K2 HERE. I think I actually drew K2 because I drew it within an existing border.

Today's Tangle - Sindoo

"Sindoo" is by Sharon Robinson and her pattern is posted HERE at TanglePatterns.com. Melinda Barlow has a video about this tangle HERE, TangleDream has one HERE and I found one more video HERE. I drew the tile below some time ago and wasn't happy with it but I'm very pleased with the colorful tile above.

Today's Tangle - Kaas

"Kaas" is by Emiko Kaneko CZT and her step-out is posted HERE at TanglePatterns.com. I first saw this design on the Zentangle Mosaic app the other day and was very excited to give it a try. I'm partial to grid tangles but this one proved to be a little more difficult than it looked. It requires some guesswork when it comes to the sizes and spacing of some of the elements. I really wanted to draw this so I just went for it and tried not to worry about getting everything exactly right. I drew the tile above first and it's very similar to the example tile that Emiko posted on Mosaic. She also has it posted HERE on Instagram if you'd like to take a look.

I was quite pleased with my first attempt in spite of its imperfections so I drew two more tiles last night which you can see below.

Classic Zentangle® - Huggins as a Monotangle

I drew this tile for a prompt in the Today's Tangles: Keeping it Classic Facebook group. The prompt for the week was to draw a monotangle using a tangle from the week's list and a string of our choosing. I chose "Huggins" and drew it on a slightly wonky grid.

Read more about "Huggins" HERE.

Today's Tangle - Tut

"Tut" is by Joan Stark and her pattern is posted HERE at TanglePatterns.

I drew mine very much like the example on the step-out and I am very pleased with how straight my rows came out even though I didn't use a ruler or straight edge. I certainly couldn't have done that when I first started tangling two years ago. I had a little trouble with the shading though. My tile is a dark gray so I wasn't quite sure where to add graphite and where to add white highlights. However, it doesn't look too bad on my computer screen even though it seems a bit dark and muddy in person. If you look closely, you'll see that I added a little "Doodah" in the corners just for fun.

Today's Tangle - Rokpool

"Rokpool" is by Neil Burley and you'll find the pattern HERE on his blog. Neil calls these mussels but I think that mine look more like almonds because of the colors that I used.

Today's Tangle - Kiasom

"Kiasom" is by Annette Plaga-Lodde CZT aka LonettA. The step-out is posted HERE on her blog. I pretty much followed the pattern except that I drew straight lines instead of curved lines that flair out.

Today's Tangle - Bekk

"Bekk" is by Cyndi Knapp and her step-out is posted HERE at TanglePatterns. I colored the loops with glitter gel pens and the colors look a bit brighter and more sparkly in real life than on my scanned image. The auras that I drew are not part of Cyndi's design.

Today's Tangle - Madama

"Madama" is by Marguerite Samama CZT. You'll find the step-out for this pretty pattern HERE on her HappyTangling blog.

Although my outcome looks about the same as Marguerite's, I drew mine a little differently. First I drew a 3x3 square pencil grid. Instead of drawing figure eights and then dividing them into Mooka-like petals, I just went ahead and drew the petals inside the grid squares in their final form. It wasn't difficult to draw them and I was able to style them more to my liking.

Today's Tangle - Liuliu Dashun

"Liuliu Dashun" is by Damy Teng CZT and her pattern is found HERE at TanglePatterns. I didn't quite follow the step-out when I drew this tile. I had trouble drawing the 6's as directed to my satisfaction so instead I drew evenly spaced orbs between the two string lines. I filled in the spaces between the orbs to look pretty much like the step-out. I think mine still look similar to Damy's design even though mine are orbs instead of teardrop shapes.

Today's Tangle - Fractal Curl

"Fractal Curl" is by Marie Browning and the pattern is posted HERE on her blog. This tangle is a lot of fun to draw and the hardest thing is deciding when to stop adding more curly branches. I enjoyed drawing this so much that I drew a second tile that you see below.

Today's Tangle - Klomp

"Klomp" is by Jody Genovese CZT and her step-out is posted HERE at TanglePatterns. I drew the tile below first to try out the pattern and it looks a bit more like the step-out. When I drew the tile above, I made the curves a little less bulgy.

Classic Zentangle® - Keeko, Knightsbridge & Tripoli

I drew this tile for a prompt in the Today's Tangles: Keeping it Classic Facebook group. The prompt had us draw a very complex string which I followed pretty closely.

These are the tangles that I used:

Today's Tangles - Mathura & Southwest Mathura

This was such a fun project that I drew four tiles. The tangle in the center of both of these tiles is called "Mathura" and is by Anne Marks. You'll find her step-out HERE. To learn how to draw and color these southwest-style tiles, check out THIS YouTube tutorial by Romi Borax Marks. Romi explains step-by-step how to draw the designs and how to color them.

I drew the tile above first and used colors that are similar to the ones that Romi used in the video. I wasn't particularly careful about the size and placement of the objects on this tile because I was just learning how to draw it. I used a tile made from cream colored card stock.

For my second tile, I drew everything more carefully and neatly. I also had a better idea of what to look for when choosing my colors. I'm very happy with the way this one came out in spite of the white Gelly Roll malfunction when trying to draw the squiggly lines near the center. The darn thing kept starting and stopping. For this tile I used kraft paper card stock which gave everything a deeper color. The dark paper also made the white gel pen designs pop more than on my first tile.

I used more muted colors on this third tile and I wasn't sure if I would like it. I kept going and finished it and was very happy after adding the white highlights. They really are what makes this design pop no matter what colors are used.

I used the same colored pencils on this tile as the previous one. They look much brighter because I drew this one on a cream colored tile instead of a dark kraft paper tile. This time I added some metallic copper accents.

Crescent Moon

Florz

Hollibaugh

Today's Tangle - Azteka

"Azteka" is by Cyndi Knapp and her pattern is found HERE at TanglePatterns.com. I usually like to draw and follow a pencil path or string when drawing patterns such as this one but I found that it was easier to draw these one by one. I did have in mind to draw them in a spiral so I made a point of curving them ever so slightly as I went along. I drew one of the variations but changed mine a little. If you compare my tile to the step-out, you will see what I did differently when I added the black accents.

Classic Zentangle® - Crazy 'Nzeppel, Molygon, Opus, Pokeroot & Printemps

I drew this classic Zentangle for something different this time. For my birthday back in April, I treated myself to a year's subscription to the Zentangle Mosaic app. I don't have a cell phone so I installed Mosaic on my Android tablet only to find out later that the app isn't compatible with Android tablets. It mostly works pretty well but it does crash a lot. In any case, I will have fun with it for a year and just put up with the quirks.

The Zentangle folks started a tangling game on Mosaic called TangleTag. There are several games of TangleTag going on simultaneously and anyone can start a new game. A new game starts when someone draws a tile with a single tangle on it. Then, they give their TangleTag game a hashtag and they tag someone. The tagged person must draw a tile using the previous tangle plus one of their choosing. They post their tile, along with all of the appropriate info and hashtags, and tag someone else and so on. I was the fifth person to be tagged in the TangleTag group called #TangleTagBeBold and I added Crazy 'Nzeppel to the previous four tangles that had been used.

One fun thing about our TangleTag group is that the first several people in the group were all from different countries; United States, China, South Africa, Australia and Germany. The woman that I tagged lives in the UK and she tagged a woman in Taiwan.

These are the tangles that I used on my tile:

Crazy 'Nzeppel

Molygon - The step-out for "Molygon" is found HERE in the Zentangle newsletter. I found a few videos about this tangle HERE, HERE and HERE. It was also featured in THIS 12 Days of Zentangle video.
